What first got you into music?

I was into music for as long as I can remember. As a child, I loved to sing and listen to all types of music. As I grew older, I sang in choirs and eventually started playing instruments and eventually landed on the guitar at around 15 years old. I started writing music shortly thereafter and knew this was more than just a hobby for me. Making music eventually became something that was an integral part of who I became.

Who inspired you to make music?

Growing up in a musical family, I would say everyone in my family, from my parents and siblings to Aunts/Uncles and cousins, really inspired me to make music. The connection was always there for me, which has allowed me to remain inspired over the years.

How would you describe the music that you typically create?

I would describe it as a melting pot of sounds. I feel for the most part I have developed my own sound; however, describing what flavor of sound has always been tough for me to assign a label to. I listen to and have been inspired by so many different genres and artists and I truly believe those influences have seeped into my subconscious when writing and arranging new material.

Can you discuss a career achievement you’re aiming for?

Ever since watching Stevie Ray Vaughn grace the stage in the 80’s, my musical dream has been to perform at Austin City Limits. I realize this goal is not going to be an easy one to obtain, but I have not given up on it yet! In all reality, to be in the position I’m in right now, which is to continue to perform regularly as well as create and release albums on my own timetable and without restrictions is pretty awesome and I’m grateful for everything.

How do you overcome writer’s block?

During the Covid-19 pandemic, I really struggled with finding inspiration to write new material. I also think I was putting a lot of pressure on myself to come up with new material and keep my songwriting fresh. However, for me, I think I overcame writer’s block by completing projects. I released a Christmas album “Night Divine” in 2023 and while I didn’t write any material for this album, I was still able to utilize my creativity by arranging these well-known tunes in my own way. Once Night Divine was finished, I had a rejuvenated feeling of accomplishment, which is what I really was craving. Since then, I recorded “Summer in Dewey” which features all original songs and was proof that I had overcome the writer’s block I was stuck in for what seemed like eternity.

What album do you recommend everyone should listen to?

Well, I’d like everyone to listen to my latest album, “Summer in Dewey”. I’m very proud of it and the team I had with me, especially Mike Strickland (Bass, Co-producer), and John B Hedges (Keyboards, Co-Producer), and Brandon Harris (drums).
I also highly recommend, “Slightly South of Stormy Clouds”, which I co-produced with my cousin John B Hedges. This is my best album to date and the one that all other albums will likely be compared with. Side note: it was also mastered by the legendary Bob Ludwig!

Can you share one of your favorite music-related memories?

This is a tough question. I’ve had so many amazing music-related memories that it’s tough to pinpoint just one. One memorable performance that comes to mind was my senior recital in college. I performed compositions that I had written and my cousin, John B flew out to perform with me. It was a great night!

What’s your go-to song or artist when you need a boost?

I think the answer to this question varies from month to month to be honest. One band (of many) that comes to mind is Dave Matthews Band. I think my connection is that I’ve been a fan since the mid-90’s and have remained a loyal fan ever since.

Do you have a favorite venue to play at or attend concerts?

I have attended Red Rocks in Colorado in the past and that was amazing! I’m planning a trip to the Sphere in Las Vegas this summer and can’t wait to experience it! I would be the luckiest guy on the planet if I had the opportunity to grave either of those stages during my career!

Who would you swap lives with for a day in the music industry?

I think I’d like to swap lives with Jacob Collier for a day…but there would have to be rules to the swap. I don’t want to swap lives with him with my current abilities. Not sure if that makes sense or not. To clarify, I’d like to swap lives with Mr. Collier for a day so I could tap into his skillset and understand some of the inner workings of a musical genius’ mind like his. Hopefully I’d be able to retain of that information and bring it back into my life.

What’s your favorite music decade and why?

I would have to say that my favorite decade for music is the 90’s. I spent my high school years in the mid 90’s and the music of that time always seemed to have a nostalgic twist to it. From the grunge movement (Alice in Chains was my favorite) to jam bands (Dave Matthews Band / Phish) to alternative rock (Radiohead), this decade really had a ton to offer.

What’s a truly unforgettable concert you’ve attended?

I saw Dave Matthews Band with a few close friends at Hershey Park, PA in 1996 and it was truly unforgettable. We weaseled our way all the way to the front of the stage and it was just a care-free amazing show from beginning to end. I had never experienced a big jam band type of act with such talent and energy. It absolutely sparked my interest and inspired me to pursue the big stage.

Tell me about your most recent released song

I recently released two songs, “So High” and “Summertime”, from “Summer in Dewey”.
Both of these songs explore themes of summer and explore the idea of being single and falling in love. In So High, I describe the feelings experienced when meeting someone for the first time and feeling an instant connection and spark, which can be intoxicating. “Summertime” dives into the feelings and emotions when you reach the part in your relationship where you realize, this might be more than just a fling…I think I want to be more than just friends.

Thank you for taking the time to interview me and I truly hope you enjoy my album “Summer in Dewey”!
