What first got you into music?

My name is Jordyn Rayne and I am a 24 year old pop/punk singer-songwriter in Edmonton, Alberta. I initially started out in musical theater and even attended Randolph College of Performing Arts in Toronto before deciding it wasn’t for me. However, I knew I still wanted to sing and perform so I came back home and got accepted into the music program at MacEwan. After graduating with a vocal performance diploma from Grant MacEwan University in 2022, I released my first full-length album “Time Capsule.” This was a compilation of songs about heartbreak, friendship, and life’s complications. It was a folk/pop album and my first attempt at songwriting/producing my own music. Following this release, I gathered up a four-piece band and we toured around Edmonton promoting these songs. Through performing with this band, I began to determine that the way I performed, and the genre of the songs from my first album, did not mesh. After riding the release of my first original album, I started to write more music that captured more of the sound I wanted to portray. Writing my second album « Lady, » released on June 7th, I wanted to write more powerful songs that emulated who I am as a person now, and how I want to be seen as a performer. “Lady”: will serve as a perfect representation of my energy on stage and serves as my debut rock release

Who inspired you to make music?

When I wrote my upcoming album I took huge inspiration from Avril Lavigne for her pop/punk style and Miley Cyrus for her performance style. I grew up on female rock artists like Pat Benetar, Joan Jett and of course Stevie Nicks that have inspired who I am as a musician. I have my classic rock roots mixed with the popular pop/punk music of today that combine to make my sound.

How would you describe the music that you typically create?

Many say that my music is what a hard hitting classic rock female singer from the 80’s would sound like in todays times. I am known for my dynamic vocal range and strong stage presence, and energetic rock performance style. You can hear that energy in all the songs I recorded for my most recent album.

Can you discuss a career achievement you’re aiming for?

I have a lot of goals and expectations for myself and I see myself working hard to get there. My ultimate goal is to win a Juno. That is the goal that will tell me that I have “made it  » as a musician. Short term goals would be a tour this summer promoting my new album “Lady” that will be released this May. I also hope to write more music that focuses on a pop/punk sound and that reinvents what that genre is. By making a name for myself in the rock genre I hope to inspire other female artists to pursue solo careers in the rock genre because we are so few and far between.

How do you overcome writer’s block?

I force myself 😅I find I am not one of those writers that can be consistently writing songs so when I know I should start writing again I start out by writing down ideas and then building off those.

What album do you recommend everyone should listen to?

One of my biggest inspirations is Stevie Nicks and so I think everyone should listen to “Rumors” all the way through and in order. There is a reason why it is known as one of the best albums of all time. There truly is not a bad song on that album and it takes you through a variety of different sounds while still sounding cohesive. Which is what I think an album should do.

Can you share one of your favorite music-related memories?

It was probably when I was in the studio during one of the first sessions and I heard my single “Poser” for the first time. I remember it being better than I ever could have imagined and it was when I realized that my new album “Lady” was going to be something special. You can see my reaction to hearing the song for the first time in the music video for “Poser.”

What’s your go-to song or artist when you need a boost?

I love love love “Whatcha Gonna Do” by Chilliwack. I can never get sick of that song and whenever I put it on I have a mini dance party.
Do you have a favorite venue to play at or attend concerts?
I love playing at The Leaf Bar and Grill here in Edmonton and The Starlite Room Temple.

Who would you swap lives with for a day in the music industry?

I think it would be interesting swapping lives with Taylor Swift for a day. Just to know what it feels like to be the most popular and most successful artist in the world today. Only just for a day tho 😅

What’s your favorite music decade and why?

80’s for sure. My dad brought me up listening to 80’s rock and roll. I feel like the 80’s is when rock really started to become the rock we all know today.
What’s a truly unforgettable concert you’ve attended?
I just saw Journey in concert this year and I was blown away by Arnel Pineda. His voice is absolutely amazing and he has the most energy I have ever seen from somebody on stage.
