**What first got you into music? / Who inspired you to make music?**

Hello, my name is Destiny Malibu! I am a singer/songwriter, musician, and mental health advocate from Malibu, California. I developed a deep love for music at a very young age. Some of my earliest memories include being in the recording studio with my mom, a professional Latin pop star. Watching her write and record music was incredibly inspiring. This early exposure to the music industry ignited my passion for music. I recorded my first song, « A Million Kisses, » at the age of five and started learning guitar at nine. When I performed « A Million Kisses » at my middle school talent show in Malibu, the positive response from my community was so affirming that it encouraged me to pursue music professionally. Since then, I’ve been fortunate to perform across the United States and internationally, appearing on American Idol, and you might have even seen my name on billboards in Las Vegas. I adopted the stage name Destiny Malibu to honor my roots and carry a piece of Malibu with me wherever I go. Music allows me to connect emotionally with people around the world, and I’m incredibly grateful to live my dream.

**How would you describe the music that you typically create?**

My music is primarily pop with elements of genre blending. Depending on the song’s mood, I experiment with Pop, EDM, Hip-Hop, RnB, Latin, Funk, and Blues. I’ve been likened to artists such as Ariana Grande, Ellie Goulding, and Iggy Azalea. Legends like Elvis, Michael Jackson, Prince, Aretha Franklin, Amy Winehouse, and James Brown have profoundly influenced my singing style. Among contemporary artists, Justin Bieber, Ariana Grande, Christina Aguilera, Rihanna, and Kali Uchis inspire me with their innovation and artistry. Justin Bieber’s early YouTube journey particularly resonated with me and influenced my own artist journey at a young age.

**Can you discuss a career achievement you’re aiming for?**

I aspire to collaborate with artists like Justin Bieber and Christina Aguilera and perform at iconic venues like Madison Square Garden, Coachella, Allegiant Stadium, and the T-Mobile Arena. Beyond my music, I aim to be remembered as a kind artist who spreads happiness and uplifts others through my music and advocacy for mental health awareness.

**How do you overcome writer’s block?**

Writer’s block is something that affects every creative at one time or another, but I’m a huge believer in never forcing the creative flow. I think it’s important to let inspiration hit when it hits. Of course, if you have a deadline for a project, you might have to try to curate environments of inspiration. But in general, I believe it’s better to let the song come to you naturally. There have been times when I’ve gone a few months without writing, and then suddenly, within a few days, I’ll write ten songs. So, I’m a big believer in letting inspiration flow.

**What album do you recommend everyone should listen to?**

There are so many timeless albums out there. Of course, I’d have to say listen to Elvis—any of his albums. Justin Bieber is another artist I’m always going to be a fan of. Right now, I think Raye is really ingenious, and Amy Winehouse is also a fantastic artist.

**Can you share one of your favorite music-related memories?**

There are two songs that hold a very special place in my heart because they remind me of my parents. My dad introduced me to « Butterfly Kisses » by Bob Carlisle and expressed his wish for it to be played at my wedding, a moment I know will be emotional for both of us one day. My mom introduced me to « Angel Baby » by Rosie and the Originals, which always evokes strong emotions as it reminds me of her. It’s remarkable how music can trigger such profound memories, and I’m grateful to contribute to others’ cherished moments through my music.

**What’s your go-to song or artist when you need a boost?**

Honestly, I love all kinds of music, and when I really need a boost, my go-to is usually an upbeat, edgy, and emotionally stirring song. I’m really loving Tommy Richman and Benson Boone, and of course, Flume and Morgan Wallen.

**Do you have a favorite venue to play at or attend concerts?**

I have performed all over the United States and am very grateful to have also performed internationally. For the last few years, I’ve been going back and forth between Los Angeles and Vegas. I’ve performed at so many casinos in Vegas, and I’m so, so grateful. I’ve been on billboards all over Vegas, and I’m still on them now—that’s something I could have only dreamed of as a kid. It’s been so cool to play at places likePalms Casino, Resorts World, Virgin Hotels Las Vegas, Stoney’s Rockin’ Country, Stoney’s North Forty, Red Rock Casino, Lake Las Vegas, and more.

**Who would you swap lives with for a day in the music industry?**

Honestly, probably Justin Bieber. I know I’ve mentioned him a lot in this interview, but he’s been one of my biggest musical inspirations. I think he’s so blessed, so talented, and so emotional in all of his performances. It would be cool to look through his lens for a day.

What’s your favorite music decade and why?

Honestly, I think every decade of music has brought something really cool to the world of creatives. I can definitely say James Brown, Aretha Franklin, and others were just groundbreaking in the music scene. The Beatles, in addition, brought a totally different type of music that left a lasting impact. I also feel like artists like Flume and Kygo are fantastic, even though they make a completely different type of music. There’s room for everybody, and I can’t say that I like one decade more than another—I love them all. I also love the era of Britney Spears and Christina Aguilera. Each decade has brought something totally unique and awesome.

What’s a truly unforgettable concert you’ve attended?

I’ve been to so many incredible concerts, but some of my favorites have been Flume, who is one of my all-time favorite artists—seeing him live was amazing. I’ve also been backstage at a Kygo concert, which was insanely awesome. And I did see Justin Bieber one time inside a club. He wasn’t necessarily giving a concert; he was just attending, but it was so cool because he had just dropped his song « Cold Water, » and he was vibing to it. That might as well have been a concert because I’m forever a Belieber.

Tell me about your most recent released song

My fourth studio album is currently in the works, and I’m tremendously excited about it. The latest single, « Say My Name, » delves into my personal struggles with mental health and how I’ve triumphed over my darkest moments. A recurring theme in my music is hope. I aim to create music that uplifts and inspires. « Say My Name » narrates some of the toughest periods in my life and my journey towards finding light. It serves as an anthem of hope, emphasizing that genuine happiness comes from within, not from external factors like wealth or popularity. The song resonates with those facing similar challenges, reminding them they’re not alone and encouraging them to seek help and support. By combining singing and elements of rap, I was able to convey intricate details of my story, adding unexpected dynamic shifts. The overwhelming positive response so far has been incredible, and I’m grateful that people connect with the message.
